What is Precious Metal Clay?

Precious Metal Clay is the brainchild of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation of Japan. Precious Metal Clay, (PMC) is a putty-like mix of silver powder, water and binder that makes it possible for almost anyone to make real silver jewellery in a matter of hours. PMC can be moulded, textured, and layered with simple tools to make pendants, earrings, rings, small sculpture in fact just about anything! The work is dried and fired (by hand or in a kiln) where the water and binder are driven off to leave a unique object that is 99.9% pure silver. Since its introduction to the USA in late 1995, PMC has found enthusiastic users among jewellers, polymer clay artists, bead makers, hobbyists, and enamellists.

  • PMC is an amazingly plastic and versatile material. It can be shaped by hand, folded, moulded, extruded and painted on another surface.
  •  PMC can be endlessly textured and takes on very fine definition.
  •  PMC can be mixed with ceramic powders and oxides to assume new shades of colour and a rougher texture.
  •  PMC can be fired with stones and ceramics. It can be glazed and enamelled.
